You stand at the door of the most exclusive club in the city. The membership fee? You only have to die to be allowed in. Because this is the Thyme, meeting grounds for the Kindred of Raleigh, NC. The bouncer, a man who looks like he could comfortably put you through a wall and still open the door with his other hand, stares down at you. An uncomfortable silence, a glint of fang, then the door is opened and you are waved through.
We are an independent role-playing group; just a group of people who enjoy getting together and pretending to be bloodsucking creatures of darkness. Sounds like fun, huh? We meet in an America Online chat room once a week and play our characters. We also have a way for non-America Online members to join in the fun playing by proxy. We have a main storyteller who sketches out a basic plot for the week, which is revealed through the role-playing that night. The player characters (PC's) must then react to the plot unfolded by the storyteller and the non-player characters (NPC's) that the storyteller controls.
What We Are NotWe are not an offically sanctioned chapter of the Camarilla fan club. We do not play by their rules, nor does anything that happens in that world affect anything in this one, and vice versa. Also, we are not freaks who think we are vampires. It's a game, folks. Don't think that we're stoned out crazies who are on a D&D kick. People who jump off buildings because they're convinced they are some kind of wizard with a flying spell are the bane of serious role-players who understand the concept of fantasy versus real-life. And, don't join if you are one of those people who can't understand that.
Now, with that out of the way......let's get down to specifics. The game we play is called Vampire: the Masquerade. And, like any game, it has rules. But, unlike most games, there is not, strictly speaking, any winners or losers. At least, not usually. You create a character, play that character in the sessions, get experience points that you can spend to make your character better, play some more, get some more points, and so on. Yes, there is an objective, usually, as part of the plot put forth by the storyteller, and as part of that, there is sometimes a nemesis to defeat. But not always. That's the beauty of this game -- you never really know what the next turn will bring, who will turn on you, who will suddenly rise to your aid -- or why.
